Romi L Burks Society for Freshwater Science 2026 Annual Meeting

Romi L Burks

Dr. Romi Burks teaches ecologically-related courses at Southwestern University, a small liberal arts college in Georgetown, Texas (a little north of Austin). Passionate about undergraduate research, she studies the ecology and distribution of apple snails, focused primarily on non-native species in Texas using environmental DNA but also quantifying diversity of native populations where possible. She recently integrated this interest in eDNA with a course undergraduate research experience on microplastics in an ecological methods course. When not working with students, Burks spends her time thinking about chocolate and developing her philosophy that anyone might be educated by chocolate given its reach across disciplines, cultures and the arts. Burks served as one of the founding members of the SFS auction and student groups a few decades ago.
