Does urban stream restoration improve biological function? Fairfax County monitored benthic macroinvertebrates at municipal restoration projects implemented from 2010 to present. This presentation discusses the evolution of a project-specific monitoring program, its status, and “early” results. Overhauled in 2015-16, the current monitoring framework needs at least seven years before assessing the post-restoration biological condition of sites. Supplemented by the county’s annual monitoring, this data set has over 75 proposed or constructed stream projects with restoration benthic monitoring data; and over 25 streams with pre- and post-restoration information. These data are compared to countywide averages, and pre- vs. post- analyses of individual projects. This presentation discusses trends and changes to macroinvertebrate assemblages that may be attributed to urban stream restoration. Further, this presentation discusses optimal experimental designs needed for restoration monitoring, factors to be applied to the data, and how these data may help direct restoration implementation.
