The Nature Conservancy (TNC) has developed bold, ambitious goals to advance meaningful progress towards mitigating the global crises of climate change and biodiversity loss. Our 2030 Goals provide a pathway for sustaining and, where necessary, restoring our natural systems based on ecological and social science. Regarding freshwater ecosystems, TNC seeks to conserve 1 million kilometers of rivers and 30 million hectares of wetlands and lakes by 2030. We have achieved 17.3% and 51.1% of those goals to date, respectively. Most of our conservation goals are achieved through (1) direct action by TNC, (2) collaboration with diverse partners, from academics and aligned non-profit organizations to federal and state agencies, and (3) indirect influence via policy change. Our on-the-ground work touches down in 40 countries and we have partnerships in an additional 41 countries, which provides us with the opportunity to make meaningful global change through local action. As a science-based organization, we prioritize our work across watersheds using a myriad of western and traditional ecological knowledge and geospatial data. For example, the “Resilient River Explorer” identifies the watersheds, streams, and rivers to protect or restore to sustain freshwater biodiversity given the threats posed by global environmental changes. In this moment, the threats to our natural systems are great. But, together, we find a way.
