This talk will provide an overview of prevention-based aquifer protection efforts by Panhandle Health District (PHD) in Kootenai County, Idaho. Historical efforts dating back to the late 1970s through present-day will be discussed. The main focus will be on PHD's Critical Materials Program, which works with commercial and industrial facilities over or adjacent to the Rathdrum Prairie Aquifer (Idaho side of the greater SVRPA) to ensure that chemicals and non-domestic wastewater are properly stored and disposed of. Additional topics will include an overview of PHD's aquifer sampling program, which has provided over 50 years of groundwater quality data; and PHD's education and outreach efforts.
